thats technically old news, ps3's been widely hacked lately. "jailbreaking" allows you to back up copies of games, run homebrew apps, host modded games, etc. considering getting a JB dongle so i can host mod lobbies for my friends on Nazi Zombies. thing is i'm afraid to get one because Sony's been banning exploited consoles lately.

This is completely different then jail breaking. Knowing the root encryption that Sony uses to make their games only playable with the genuine disc was cracked. Jail breaking can be removed/banned with firmware updates from Sony... where having the actual root encryption isn't something they can just upgrade firmware without having to remake and redistribute every single game sold. The games and the console work together with the encryption... If that is hacked, Sony really can't do much about it (as of now). I'm sure they will figure out a way to read hacked consoles.... but there is no way to stop a root encryption crack.

The people that hacked the root said they will not be releasing it publicly. I'm sure it will leak though.

tad, root access is basically what jailbreaking does. without root access, homebrew cannot be installed, you cannot mod games/change cmds/cvars/dvars/etc. the release of the 3.56 firmware killed it temporarily, but i'm sure they'll be able to re-pack the firmware files soon.

I wasn't clear what I meant. Yes, jailbreaking uses rooting. What I meant, which I now see I didn't type right due to me being an idiot.....

Is the jail breaking that PS3 had was not the same type of root access that was cracked. Yes, you could JB before, and it did effect the root... but the new root hack rewrites the root as opposed to "fooling it".

Even with teh JB in the past, no one actually "hacked" the antipiracy from sony in the root, they just tricked it. Now, however, if the sony root hack was properly installed, there would be no update to fix it. They can fix someone adding to the root, but if they changed their antipiracy via firmware, none of their games would work..... because the discs would not read.
