Although I will state that this is for "educational purposes" only..... Quake III Arena has been out of print for many years making this a legal tutorial.

(Direct ISO download option at the bottom of the tutorial)

Step 1:
Create a folder on your computer any where you like. Name it "Quake III". (I suggest to make it under the C: drive to make it easier to find. Example: C:Quake III. A desktop folder will also work but you will need to be able to locate the path for xfire so I suggest just creating it in C:

Step 2:
Inside the Quake III folder you made, make a new folder and name it "baseq3" in lowercase. If you created your Quake III folder in C:, your path will read "C:Quake III/baseq3"

Step 3:
Download the file named "PAK0.PK3" from here: http://destroys.us/media/?C=D;O=A . Save that file to your desktop. That file is 457MB, so it will take a little while to download. That is the main Quake III file and can not be loaded from a point release.

Step 4:
While that file is downloading, you will need to download the 1.16 point release here: http://www.quakeunity.com/file=2616 . Save to desktop.

Step 5:
Once the PAK0.PK3 file has finished, move it to the baseq3 folder you created in the Quake III folder.

Step 6:
Run the 1.16 point release. MAKE SURE YOU CHANGE THE DIRECTORY TO LINK TO THE QUAKE III FOLDER YOU MADE. This will give you the .exe needed to run quake and update it to 1.16 compatibility.

Step 7:
Go here: http://noghost.net/modfiles/1.16/NoGhost_Client.zip. Extract the contents into your baseq3 folder. This will give you the current NoGhost mod.

Note: If you get a blue screen error on startup, that typically means that you did not install the point release correctly. Install the point release again and make sure that the path is correct to the Quake III folder you created.

As far as your CFG file, it will automatically generate the first time you run Quake III. You may make changes once your CFG has generated by either in game console commands or manual edits in notepad/wordpad. If you have your own CFG file already, just add it to the baseq3 folder you created after you have ran Quake III the first time.

Xfire users: This install will NOT be located by Xfire automatically and you will not be able to connect via Xfire untill you show Xfire where the .exe is.
To do so:

1. Open Xfire
2. Click the "tools" tab
3. Go to options "options"
4. Click the "games"
5. On the left click "Not Installed"
6. Find Quake III Arena on the list and click it
7. To the right you will see "automatically detect" in a pull down menu.
8. Change that to "manually detect"
9. Under the "detect path" box is a "browse" button. Click.
10. The file name it is looking for may say "ChallengeQ3" Change that to quake3.exe either typing it or the pulldown below the file name.
11. on your computer where the "Quake III" folder you created
12. Your path should read C:Quake III/quake.exe

You should now be able to start Quake III from Xfire.

This is a full, fresh, and clean install of quake. No one will or can drop from this install at all.

I was giving an alternative.... and we had a post about this before I even met you that has been stickied for years.... I was just revising it. Hence (update)... since torrents are the last place to get Quake and frog seemed to promote that in the thread.

The only issue... which isn't a "huge" deal is... My method is a complete and CLEAN install. There is no way/chance/possibility that there is a corrupt file, bad cfg, hacks, or anything that can drop someone. I'm in no way saying the one you posted will, or Smokey's.... but this is a complete assurance that everything the person gets it strictly default.... no questions asked.

All the mega-uploads and other full downloads have had a few people blame the download for a drop. This way there is no chance. The exe is generated, the point release i from ID as is the PK file.

Again... I personally believe that the files that are full version that people that we trust have uploaded are clean versions.... but this way there can never be a debate about it. How many times have people blamed the H$ full DL for them dropping..... 5? 10? Was it from that? Never.... but it can and will raise suspicion to new players.

This install is and will always be the cleanest way to install a completely default Quake III arena.

And if you think about it... this takes what... a few more minutes at the most? Being able to DL the Pk files separate from the PR actually makes the timing close to the same. Also, I described how to find it with Xfire in-case it's not installed to a normal location.

I have installed quake this way for 4 years, about 15 times on my and others computers.... not once have I seen or had a problem. No one has ever claimed that I gave them a bad install. And 2 people have dropped for hacking that could have blamed the install if they wanted to try.... but did not. I have seen at least 1 person drop from a torrent and a few drop from shared files or cfgs. Again, this being 100% default there can never be an issue.

Well put it this way.. I and a LOT of others have downloaded that and it is fine. I also know it is clean because;
1. I haven't dropped nor has anyone else.
2. It is all the files directly from the Q3A CD.

Anyways reason I posted it is because it doesn't take as long to do. Download in an hour at like 300k internet which is slow but way better than what I have.

It being 150+ MB more then my file... yours would take longer (you can piggyback the PR)

Although with my net speed and after checking both. My files downloaded in just under 5 minutes, and your link just under 7.

Not really.

After DL'ing that link you sent.... it's kinda packed with things that can easily bring up the "I dropped because of that download." I know that link is clean and I'm not saying it isn't.... but theres so many unneeded things that the quake folder has.

Along with many unnecessary map files and PK files including.... Nemesis? This would not be considered a "fresh" install.

I've never said my method was better in any way.... I was just giving an alternative and the ability to download and install Q3 to a complete default, out of the box, new state.

Think of this.... if there is ever an anti-bot update... will this install still clean? Im sure it will be but who knows. Maybe a map file could be corrupt, or a PK file triggers something (not saying it will, but is an unanswerable question). A completely default install avoids all questions.

Well yes we added a few maps and the mods but other than that every thing is directly from the CD.. all the things in the folders ARE clean. Anyways people downloading q3 have options.. whatever they want.

Your stupid.. .rar & .zip are the same thing pretty much except .rar compresses bigger files and has a higher compression.

some people dont get WinRAR cause they can only find Trial... so they stick with Windows ZIP for functionality. oh ya some people DONT LIKE CHANGE LOL..!
