#1 3 guys in 1 hotel. What happen to the dollar? on Tue Dec 02, 2008 3:08 pm

Dice

okay guys,
here's a question for all the nerds out there. cough* sketch cough*

Question:
1 hotel            cost $30

3 guys paid $10.                      3 x 10 = $30

The manager maid a mistake, the hotel cost $25.
So then he gave 5 dollars back to them in coins.

The 3 guys split the 5 dollars, but they are missing 1 dollar. However, the manager did not rip them off.

Think about it:
if they split out the 5 dollars, each of them paid $9 and there is $2 extra.

The math:
$9 x 3 = $27
$27 + the $2 extra = $29
What happen to the extra dollar?

Lol that's E-Z

You're counting the 2 dollars in the 27, then adding an extra 2.

Why would they pay 27 if the room is 25? There's your 2 extra dollars already counted in.

lmao your all wrong,
the anwer is...............NOTHING
its a trick question
the addition with in the math problem cancels out a doller,
in basic terms, well i dont know how to explain it better then that.
point is, the 1 doller basically disapers due to the formation of the addition.
you dont belive me? add it up in your heads or on a peice of paper
put it in semplistic form and take out all the people running back and forth with money and shit, no matter what, youll end off with a missing doller Smile
srry for cracking your riddle so early ><

EDIT//: lmao at porny and killer, i think you guys needa reread the quetion i bit better >.>

______

Seenage:
The answer is nothing. Most people say, tax, the hotel manager took it and etc haha!
But I want to know why the addition, multiplication (all the basic math) aren't working out.

fu... there is no dollar missing at all amke tha calcul... 25/3 = 8.3333...

9x3 = 27

they have 2 extra dollar.. witch they can devide to each other ... what would make 0.66666...$

and they have each one dollar from thr 10 to 9... so they each have 1.666... $

I don't see any dollar disapearing in there

Dice

I dont understand what you just said. Im guessing your math goes like this:
9x3 = 27
2/3 = 0.66
add them: 27 + 0.66
Still it wont be add up to 30.

Here's the math calculation.
the 5 dollars that the manager gave is in coins.
Lets say X X X X X let X = $1

If the 3 guys paid $10, then they have to split the $5.
First guy: $10 - X = $9
Second guy: $10 - X = $9
Third guy: $10 - X = $9
Plus the $2 extra: X + X = $2

Add them together: $9 + $9 + $9 + $2 = $29

fu..... listen they payed 30 he gave them back 5........=25 (keep in mind that THEY PAYED $30)
if they each slpit it 1$ each witch would be the only possible way they can all benefit from it that would mean that each of them ended up paying $9 isntead of 10 ......9x3=27 now think about, they still have $2 left over from the 5 since they each took $1 BUT! if you add that 2 to the 27 then that only = 29
now heres the thing HE GAVE THEM BACK $5 not 4 so it should equal to 30 not 29....WTF HAPPENED TO THAT 1 doller?!?!?!?!?!??!

simple......"it gets lost in the equation" Smile

i always said this 3 ppl paid $25 and their change is $5
Math $25 + $5 =$30 lol!

This theory is very popular with math maticians. It's the theory where .99999999 repeating will eventually reach the whole number 1. The two fractions of a dollar that add up to this are lost in the world problem, but not lost on paper. 25 dollars divied by 3 people = 8.33333(repeating). You add that to the remaining 5 dollars divided among the 3 people = 1.6666666(repeating) BUT if you notice, on the computer's calculator, 5/3 = 1.666666667 The decimal eventually will end in a 7. So, when it is added with the .33333, it will reach 1. And there my dear friend, is your missing dollar. And we have a WINNNERR. Yeah, I just totally chewed your word problem and spit it out
-ToT@L

Dice

Yeah I can also do that.
But you can't have $1.6666667 dollars.

your theory is just like what kinsler said.

"u r the 4 person that ask this question 2 me
i always said this 3 ppl paid $25 and their change is $5
Math $25 + $5 =$30"

_______

seriouslly though, there is no answer or mathematical way to answer this. So if your answer is "it didn't disapper" then you got it right. There is no explanation xD

DOUBLE POST!!!:

You said the manager gave them the 5$ back in change. But, everyone assumed they would get exact dollars. The only problem is that you can't have a repeating decimal with change, which is why it gets lost in the word problem, but not on paper. Razz Math is my forte. If I didn't explain this well enough and you guys REALLY care I can try again but more clearly.

EDIT!(In regards to the previous post)

Are you kidding me? lol! I just gave you a mathematical answer. You can easily answer this problem with math, but you can't answer it without showing your math. Someone could cut their piece of coin into 2/3 to get .666667 if you really want to be THAT specific. It's not economically correct, but then again we're not counting that, or the result of all outside affects and catalysts. Wink
