PostSubject: How to record and edit a basic quake movie   Sat Jul 25, 2009 4:18 am

First off, let me say that this tutorial is for dm68 demos only, as they are the best demo versions to work with q3mme, which are quake version 1.32 demos. If you recorded a demo in version 1.16, please get someone to convert them for you as I don't know how. Once you get your demos converted, please refer back to the rest of this tutorial. Thank you.

Ok, first things first. You have your dm68 demo and you want to make it into a movie right? Well, some things you will need is a demo recording program, practice, and a whole lot of computer space. Some of you may have heard of the program fraps. I don't recommend it. Instead use q3mme, a better visual and quake-friendly demo recorder. The q3mme forums can be found here: http://q3mme.proboards.com/index.cgi Please don't hesitate to read all the tutorials at least a couple times, they help a bunch.

Now, you have your q3mme installed and it's running fine hopefully. If not, refer to their General section and you can post your problems there. Read how to run q3mme and how to record your demos in game. All of this can be found in the tutorials. I would take the time to explain everything, but it's already all on their forums, so go have a look Smile

After you have recorded your dm68 demos in q3mme, you should have a bunch of tga screenshots in a folder. You need to compact and convert all of these screenshots into an avi file. Sounds complicated right? NOT. Download this program: http://www.digital-digest.com/software/download.php?sid=1017&ssid=0&did=2 It's a tga/bmp picture to avi file converter. When you run this program, simply find the folder containing all your ss's and select the TGA option. Then set the Frame Rate to 30 or 60 (60 is better for slow-mo and nicer looking movies, or go higher than 60 if you want to) and then Convert and wholla! You now have an avi file that should be roughly around 1 GB depending on how much you recorded. Please note that q3mme records demos to a different folder for every map you record on, so you will most likely have to make a few different avi files.

The next step in your movie making process is to get a movie editing program like Sony Vegas. Here's an easy and 100% working video on how to get sony vegas for free. Simply follow the video and you will have all you need! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4R_mOh68h7s

Once you get sony vegas up and running, simply import your avi files and you're on your way to editing and making your movie what you want it to be. Smile

I hope this clears up any FAQ's about movie-making. Thanks for reading.

P.S. Can someone please make this a sticky?

I use beta 26, but they now have version 33 out so I'll probably switch to that
